As I evolve as a photographer, I am further convinced that there are no rules to color or lighting. What does the image feel like? That seems to be the most important question. This can also be applied to smut, which I feel is at a crossroads. The big production houses (at least the smart ones) are trying to make their shit feel more authentic and less polished, while the independent creators try to legitimize themselves with higher production value. Then there’s the average consumer who just wants to see someone that resembles their ex pissing on-camera. What a world. Bonus video coming tomorrow.

Today I’d like you to enjoy another head of curly hair, but this time from a different part of the world. A savage place where if you walk into a doctor’s office, they can and will tell you how much a particular treatment costs. So primitive, right? For those of you outside the US, Americans never know how much a medical service will run until weeks later, as the bills start to arrive in the mail. This is how polite society works. Venice Beach is a place that I have been visiting since I was a child. We used to drive up from Texas, back when it was legal, I assume, to let your children bump around in the back of a flatbed truck without wearing a seatbelt. We came for the colorful graffiti, the smell of burning sage and cannabis, the street performers and bodybuilders thirsty for attention, the grungy style of skaters, the shitty food and gimmicky souvenir t-shirts. The beach is decent, but that isn’t why you go to Venice. You go to be entertained by humanity. You go to see people like Lina Telemann.

One of the most important lessons that my mentor imparted to me was never to assume that anyone I meet is actually who they say they are. We’ll slide down the surface of things. Sometimes, I even convince myself that my own bullshit is real. I eat healthy, I am a mature person, I make smart decisions–all things that I believe as I stuff my face with greasy nachos and photograph a woman flashing me her breasts at a crowded restaurant in Arizona. Oh, well. At least my lifestyle has afforded an opportunity to meet hundreds of wild, attractive individuals like Rebel Tee. And at least I am let in on some of their secrets.
